Blue Emperor
-
This beautiful iridescent blue butterfly inhabits tropical rainforest areas of Australia, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands. Sometimes called the Ulysses butterfly, this species is named after the Greek hero from the epic Odyssey. Males of this species are strongly attracted to the colour blue, as they identify females by the small blue crescents on the undersides of their hind wings. During the mating season males are often seen hanging around blue inanimate objects, mistaking them for potential mates.
