  • Tyrannosaurus rex (“Tyrant lizard king”)

Timeline: Late Cretaceous (68-66 million years ago)

    Size: 15 metres in length
    Range: Northwestern USA & Canada
Habitat: Open forest, grassy plains and coastal swamps
    Diet: Carnivorous

As one of the most iconic dinosaurs, Tyrannosaurus rex (fondly nicknamed T-rex) is feared and loved in equal measure. Although other carnivores rivalled or exceeded them in size, T-rex still grew to a height of over 5 metres tall and 15 metres from nose to tail. Their powerful jaws contained over 60 sharp pointed teeth, each up to 20 cm long and able to crunch through the thick bones of other dinosaurs.

T-rex are famous for their unusually small forearms, however the reason behind these tiny limbs is a highly contested mystery. Some scientists suggest they may be vestigial while others believe that studies of the fossil record and possible musculature suggested that these limbs were actually considerably strong and may have been used to hold struggling prey. Others disagree and believe that these limbs may be reduced to counteract and balance the incredible weight of the dinosaur's giant head, or to help the dinosaur rise from a lying position. It has also been suggested that T-rex may have fed in large social groups, and their tiny arms evolved to avoid getting in the way of many individuals feeding at once and fighting over food.
