Plesiosaur Paddle Bone
-
Plesiosaur (“Near to Lizard”)
Timeline: Late Triassic - Late Cretaceous (203 - 66 million years ago)
Size: 1.5 - 15 metres
Range: European seas and throughout Pacific Ocean
Habitat: Wide range of marine environments
Diet: PiscivorousPlesiosaurs were not dinosaurs, although they coexisted throughout their long history. They are aquatic reptiles with long flexible necks, small heads and large, oval-shaped bodies with small tails. They had four fins and a short broad tail for mobility. They mostly fed on fish, cephalopods and mollusks, but new evidence may suggest they were also “bottom-feeders”, grazing the seabed for clams and snails.
It is believed that Plesiosaurs did not lay eggs like dinosaurs and modern reptiles, but instead gave birth to live young. New research on plesiosaur fossils provides evidence that plesiosaur babies were poor swimmers and likely required parental care.
