  • Mosasaurus (“Lizard of the Meuse [river]”)
Timeline: Late Cretaceous (82 - 66 million years ago)
    Size: 1 - 15 metres in length
    Range: Nearly worldwide
Habitat: Wide range of marine environments
    Diet: Carnivorous

While some species only grew to around 3 ft in length, the biggest, Tylosaurus, could be over 50 ft. They swam using a shark-like tail fin, and had flipper-like limbs for manoeuvrability. Stomach contents of mosasaurs have revealed a varied diet, including fish, sea turtles, plesiosaurs and even sea birds. It is also believed that their jaws could expand like a snake, allowing them to swallow large prey whole.

Mosasaurs are not dinosaurs, they are reptiles and are closely related to modern Monitor lizards. Although mosasaurs are aquatic, they still breathed air like all reptiles and had to regularly surface to take a breath.
